Dù từng là thương hiệu đi đầu trong việc thúc đẩy công nghệ điện hóa nhờ xe hybrid nhưng Toyota vẫn chưa hoàn toàn sẵn sàng để chuyển đổi và phát triển mảng xe thuần điện. Hãng xe Nhật Bản này vẫn đang loay hoay, chậm chạp trong việc phát triển xe điện.
Theo một số nguồn tin, hiện tại Toyota đang nghiên cứu một nền tảng khung gầm mới dành riêng cho xe điện. Do đó, gần đây, các kỹ sư của Toyota đã tháo rời một chiếc Tesla Model Y để nghiên cứu – một thông lệ phổ biến trong ngành.
Theo đó, bên trong Model Y được chia thành hai phần chính. Trong đó, bộ pin đóng vai trò quan trọng trong cấu trúc xe. Việc này giúp trọng lượng xe Tesla giảm gần 100 kg, và bớt được hàng trăm bộ phận.
Điều này cũng là dễ hiểu bởi nền tảng khung gầm này của Toyota đã được phát triển từ cách đây gần chục năm, nó vốn để thích ứng với xe xăng và xe hybrid.
Hiện tại, Toyota cũng đang hợp tác, liên doanh với một hãng xe điện nổi tiếng của Trung Quốc là BYD. Toyota đã thành lập một trung tâm nghiên cứu và phát triển xe không phát thải chuyên dụng và đã công bố kế hoạch nâng cấp nhà máy ở Kentucky, Mỹ, làm nơi chế tạo xe điện từ năm 2025.
Hãng đã cố gắng nghiên cứu và phát triển những mẫu xe điện có bộ pin đáp ứng đủ tiêu chuẩn chất lượng. Đồng thời, Toyota muốn đảm bảo họ có đủ vật liệu sản xuất pin để tránh tắc nghẽn trong sản xuất trước khi ra mắt các mẫu xe.
Đây cũng là một trong những tiêu chí khiến cho hãng xe Nhật Bản xứng danh hãng xe quốc dân về độ bền bỉ và an toàn.
